March 2011
Its definitely time to start
trimming back the burnt
or frost bitten plant
material. The likelihood
of a damaging hard
freeze this late in the
season is slim to none.
When trimming back your
damaged plant life, be
sure to cut all the way
down to a point in the
material that still appears
to be green and holding
water. This area should
be firm when pinched or
squeezed.
If the stalk still seems
brownish, or soft to the
touch, find a hard point
to trim it back to.
Sometimes you may need
to trim it all the way back
to the ground.
For palm trees, cut the
burnt frawns away and
hope for a speedy
regeneration. There isn't
much that can be done if
the freeze made it into
the trunk, so don't expect
to saw it in half and end
up with much more than a
good start to a totem
pole.
